Where you are

A headland with the sea on three sides

Sunset Shores sits on two miles of south-facing shoreline, between a working harbor town and a stretch of coast with nothing on it at all. The light arrives late here and leaves slowly, which is most of the reason people come in October.

The airport is an hour and ten, forty minutes of it past the last traffic light. Most guests arrive in the afternoon and do not move the car again.

Every room here faces out. The west building takes the afternoon and the east building takes the morning, and each one has a balcony, a terrace or a door onto the lawn. Five room types, from a garden room for two to a villa on the point with water on three sides.

A tasting menu that changes with the catch

Vera runs one tasting menu a night, built on whatever the boats brought in that morning. Six seats at the counter face the pass, one sitting, and they are the reservation that goes first. The dining room takes the other thirty-four.

Par 71, two tee sheets a day, and a starter who will pair you up if you are on your own. Carts are included in the green fee.

The pool runs two hundred and sixty feet along the lower terrace. Twenty-two cabanas sit along the top edge, each seating six, with shade you control, a stocked refrigerator and a server on that terrace all afternoon. Eight daybeds sit nearer the water, for two.

If the pool is not where you want to be all day, take a bike out to the point before the light goes. Bikes and equipment are at the beach hut.

Forty at one table, under the palms, with the doors open onto the sea, is the evening people ask for by name. Eleven spaces sit behind it, from a boardroom for sixteen to a ballroom that divides three ways.
