The kitchen

One menu a night, written when the boats come in

Everybody at Vera eats the same thing on the same night. The menu is set in the afternoon, once the kitchen knows what came off the boats and what is ready in the garden, and it runs to five courses in the dining room or eight at the counter.

Forty seats, one seating in the dining room from half past six, and a room small enough that the chef sends most of the plates herself.

Five courses $165

In the dining room, from half past six. One fish from that morning, one thing from the garden, and a course between them that is usually the best on the menu.

Eight courses $240

At the counter, at seven, for the six people sitting there. Three more courses, and the ones that are too small to send across a room.

Before tax and service. Tell the kitchen about anything you do not eat when you reserve and it is worked around rather than removed.

The Chef's Table

The Chef's Table, six seats at the pass

Six stools along the pass, one seating at seven, and the eight-course menu rather than the five. You watch the plates being finished, and the chef hands most of them over herself.

It is not a private room and it is not a demonstration. It is the six best seats in a forty-seat restaurant, and the reason they go three weeks out is that there are six of them.

Private dining

Private dining in the cellar room

One long table for fourteen, below the dining room, with its own door off the west terrace. Your party arrives and leaves without crossing the restaurant.

The menu is the eight-course one, set for the table, and the wine is chosen with you beforehand rather than from a list on the night.

Before you come

Canceling

Cancel by noon on the day with nothing to pay. The counter holds a card and charges $80 a seat for a no-show, because six seats are the whole night.

What you do not eat

Tell the kitchen when you reserve. Every course is worked around rather than removed, and the counter needs two days' notice because those plates are made to order.

Children

Welcome at the early sitting, and there is a shorter menu for them. The counter is adults only, which is a matter of stools rather than of policy.

Getting in

Step-free from the lobby along the west corridor. Two tables in the dining room take a wheelchair without moving anything, and the counter does not. Say so when you reserve and one of the two is held.
